This listing is for a remarkable wood workbench complete with 36 miraculous tools. The workbench and all tools were crafted by U. The bench itself is made entirely of wood, and features numerous amazing details: there are four working drawers for tool and accessory storage one of the drawers has divided sections for keeping planes separated (see second to last photo)! (There are two drawers in front, under the middle shelf, and one on each end of the bench).
There are nine drilled holes and in the top shelf, for inserting screwdrivers, and two long slats for storing saws and chisels, one large shelf, below the top shelf, for storing accessories. There is a substantial workbench table space for laying out projects and tools, and four sturdy legs with bracing. My favorite detail is the working vise clamp attached to the front of the bench for holding project pieces in place while being worked on. I acquired this set from a retired retail shop, so I believe it is actually new old stock, although there is no original packaging.
The workbench is signed underneath with Terry's maker's mark ("MA"for McAlister); it also came in a box with other items from the shop with a handwritten note about its contents, saying the tools were by Terry McAlister. Upon researching this artisan, I found information about this exact bench and all the tools he made to go with the bench.
There was even a photo of him with the bench presumably by the photographer who documented his work (see final photo). The lot comes with the photograph and a letter likely written by Terry himself, but on the letterhead of the. Photographer who documented Terry's career and the making of the bench. So clearly both the bench and all the tools are by McAlister. The bench is really wonderfully detailed and would be perfect in a garage or workroom, or carpenter's shop. However the tools are really the most amazing part of this set: utterly realistic, perfectly crafted, beautiful to look at, and (according to one source I found) actually work (I haven't tested this)!
All tools are designed in their "vintage" style so, c. Late 1800s through mid 1900s. Almost every tool is made of wood (some natural color, some stained or dark wood), many with brass or metal parts. The list of the 36 gorgeously crafted tools consists of.
4 metal saws with wood handles. 1 file with wood handle.1 carpenter's try square with wood handle. 1 brass ruler (numbered up to 18 "inches", plus angles marked). 4 different wood mallets (one with brass-wrapped head). 1 brass oil can (non-working).
1 "filled" brass paint or varnish can with stir stick. 3 block planes with metal blades. 1 fenced plow plane with a metal blade. 1 level (with little "bubble-tube" but non-working).
1 coping saw with wood handle. 1 auger drill with wood hands. 1 egg beater hand drill.
1 brass blow torch with wood handle (non-working). 1 paper box of "Emerald 2" Steel Nails (empty box). NOTE: The bench is quite large, so please see dimensions to know what you are getting. Terry designed it as a 1:12 scale piece, but it will take up a lot of space in your "workroom" or garage. The tools are not at all bulky or over-sized, but are quite perfect in their scale and craftsmanship. This would also be a delightful gift for any devoted woodworker: to have the tools of their trade in such a. Marvelous display setting, in such diminutive size!
For those who like to know about the artisan: (From a letter, likely written by Terry himself). Terry McAllister started making toy soldiers and military vehicles when he was a small boy guided by his father and mother who were makers of dolls houses and interiors. Terry produced a 1:12 scale, accurate and detailed miniature workbench, complete with 30 miniature tools that all work. One of his early problems was finding miniature working tools to make his miniature creations. He finally overcame this: he made them. His work was in great demand in.He used the best wood for his work, cherry, walnut, and oak. He worked from original reference books.
